Remember the IDIOT who tried to mug an MMA fighter?

111206-anthony-miranda-5a

Well, here's his mugshot taken right after he got what he deserved.

According to MSNBC  (December 06, 2011):

One Chicago man certainly learned his lesson the hard way
when messed with the wrong “victim”. Anthony Miranda, 24, attempted to
mug a man who turned out to be a mixed martial art (M.M.A.) expert,
and got pretty beat up in the process, even accidentally shooting
himself in the ankle. Talk about poetic justice.

The victim, whose name police have not released, was sitting in his
parked car when Miranda approached him and asked him to borrow a
lighter. When the victim informed Miranda that he did not have a
lighter, Miranda pulled out a handgun and demanded that he get out of
the vehicle.

A struggle ensued, and the victim was at some point able to take
control of the firearm while Miranda’s attention was diverted. During
the struggle, the two men took their fight to the ground, and Miranda
accidentally discharged his gun, shooting himself in the ankle.

The victim had complete control over Miranda and was able to pin him
down to the ground until police arrived. The victim told officials
that he was a mixed martial arts expert and ultimate fighting
champion.

Miranda sustained minor injuries to his face with multiple cuts and
bruises. He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital.

Miranda is being charged with armed robbery and aggravated discharge
of a firearm, which is a class X felony. Records show that Miranda has
been convicted of numerous other charges, including at least one for a
residential burglary.

Cabbagetown (Toronto)

(download)
Cabbagetown is one of Toronto's oldest neighbourhoods. It's said that its name comes from Irish immigrants who were so poor that they planted cabbages and other vegetables in their front yards.

The area is now a mix of young urban professionals who have renovated the old Victorian homes, and new immigrants from developing nations. These newer arrivals live in a section of Cabbagetown called Regent Park - the country's oldest and largest social housing project - which is now under-going its own revitalization.

There are four or five Christian churches (most of them quite old), two mosques and a Hindu temple all within a few blocks of each other.

When current residents were asked what they liked about the neighbourhood, they listed such things as:

  • cultural diversity
  • available services (local library, police station, fire station, medical clinics, nearby hospitals)
  • good public transit (TTC - three street car routes, two bus routes, two nearby subway stations)
  • wide range of shopping options, including small businesses
  • restaurants and bars for every budget and taste
  • organized and affordable activities for all ages, annual summer street festival and seasonal street decorations
  • lots of greenery: tree-lined streets, a large local park with a conservatory and a dog run, several small parkettes

There are many laneways throughout Cabbagetown, and in one, there is a 200 year old stable which was converted to an electromagneplating plant in the early 20th century. Approximately fifty years ago, it was renovated into residential units.

Another set of structures located on Gerrard Street now features a pub called The Underdown, a Children's Book Bank, several loft-style apartments, and some medical offices, but once it was the city's morgue. Some swear that the building is haunted!
